Sig Brace 190104 100747 22324800fce26a819a1e10ad9771752c

Notebook: Did You Notice The Sig Brace In The PWS Modern Musket Video?

There's been some buzz on the interwebs this week on a cool video put out by precision AR-maker Primary Weapons Systems. It's a slick vid for sure, putting an attractive mom together with a studly former Marine husband and their toe-headed cool kid on a little good 'ole family backcountry plinking date. I'm diggin' it a lot — and not just for the script and its message. But what's really cool (besides the really impactful logo PWS is using for their Modern Musket builds) is the dad's use of the Sig Brace on his PWS Modern Musket AR pistol. There was some debate over whether the ATF would deem using the Sig Brace on the shoulder as a violation of restrictions on AR pistols. Folks were nervous that the ATF would deem shouldering the Sig Brace an illegal use on a pistol build. But a couple weeks ago, ATF send Sig a letter saying that as long as the brace was not modified in any way, the agency could not deem its use as such illegal. The ATF said it cannot enforce rules on firearms when they are not used in their intended use. That's opened up new appeal for AR pistols since the Sig Brace makes use of the buffer tube without wasting it. Might be another reason to stock those Sig Braces on your shelves — and maybe to get more into AR pistols with your retail sales. And oh, notice the family's dog?

Plinker AR 190104 100743 22324800fce26a819a1e10ad9771752c

Plinker Arms AR-15 .22LR

The number of tactical rifles chambered for the relatively cheap and easy to shoot .22LR rimfire cartridge continues to grow, and many shooters, particularly those using the guns for training purposes, are looking for guns the operate and feel like the standard firearms. Having made a name for themselves with .22LR magazines for ARs and other components and accessories, Plinker Arms has introduced a line of full rimfire rifles. The Plinker Arms AR-15 .22LR rifle comes in standard M4 carbine configuration, AR-15 rifle configuration, or with a bull barrel. Both the upper and lower receiver are designed to be interchangeable with standard 5.56/.223 AR uppers and lowers. Unlike many rimfire ARs, the Plinker Arms AR features a bolt hold open at the end of a magazine and much more closely mirrors the operation of a standard AR. The Plinker Arms design includes the Quick Adjustment Latch Systesm. The QALS allows a Plinker upper receiver to be fine-tuned to the lower it’s mounted on to ensure that the bolt hold open. Even when billed as “mil spec,” lower receivers can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and even from gun to gun. QALS allows the shooter to quickly and easily tweak the upper with a supplied adjustment key. The QALS comes in the box adjusted to a standard setting which should work with the majority of AR lowers, but the gun owner can tweak the default if needed. The Plinker Arms AR-15 .22LR lower is an alloy anodized 7075 T6 aluminum unit which is compatible with most standard AR uppers. The machined upper, fashioned from the same 7075 T6 aluminum, features a free floating barrel, the Plinker Arms bolt hold open system, an upper rail, and the QALS. All models come with the Plinker Arms Load Assist Tool and a 25-round magazine. (10-round mags are supplied instead for state compliance if needed.) The AR-15 and M4 models have an MSRP of $699.99 and the bull barrel rifle has an MSRP of $719.00.

HK MR762A1: The Porsche Of ‘Heavy’ ARs

There are awesome rifles. Then there are freaking awesome! rifles. It’d be tough to argue that the Heckler & Koch MR762A1 rifle doesn’t fit into the second category. Just looking at it gives most shooters an itchy trigger finger. ARG&H recently had the chance to throw a few rounds downrange with this bad boy, and we’ll tell you, the think shoots like a dream. With its German engineering and aggressive styling, think of it as the Porsche 911 turbo of the 7.62 semi-auto world. Designers at H&K put reliability and accuracy at the top of the list in developing the MR762A1, with a cold hammer forged barrel and piston operating system, shots are consistent and maintenance in easy. Based on the H&K 416 — which is used by top tier special operations troops — and the 417 — which is the Marine Corps’ replacement for the Squad Automatic Weapon — the MR762A1 gives civilian and law enforcement shooters the power and dependability of its military counterparts. During a police-sponsored sniper course, ARG&H friend and master instructor with International Training Incorporated Brandon Wright used the MR762A1 for the shoot. From the get go, Wright said, his fellow students ogled at the new rifle, wanting to trade in their bolt guns for the sexy machine. And when Brandon starting shooting his targets, the MR762A1 really started to turn heads. “I was shooting very tight groups right out of the box,” Wright said of his week shooting the H&K rifle. “And since it was a semi-auto, I was engaging targets a lot faster than the other students without sacrificing accuracy at all.” High caliber AR-style rifles have come a long way over the past few years, with hunters and shooting sportsmen beginning to see the advantages of a semi-auto platform throwing larger .308 or 7.62 rounds to their targets. Gone are the days that such rifles played second fiddle to their bolt-action brothers as the engineering and design of these “heavies” continue to refine. And while they’re a bit costlier than their 5.56/.223 counterparts — with the H&K MR762A1 carrying a Porsche-like price of nearly $4,000 — their battle-tested reliability and long-range takedown accuracy make rifles like this a great addition to any AR-shooters quiver.
