According to one of the top dogs at SilencerCo, the ground-breaking Maxim 9 all-in-one suppressed handgun will be ready for shipping to gun stores in the 3rd quarter of this year.

SilencerCo co-founder Josh Waldron told Tactical Retailer gun stores should have the Maxim 9 by fall, revealing his company had poured $5 million into the product.

From the company's launch in 2008, Waldron said building a firearm like the Maxim 9 has been a core focus. He said while the Maxim 9 is the main effort right now, he and SilencerCo president Jonathon Shults have plans to offer a line of integrally-suppressed firearms, including shotguns and rifles.

"We want to create an environment where a customer walks into a store and the salesman says 'there's the quiet one, and there's the loud one,' " Waldron said in an interview at the 2016 NRA Annual Meeting. "Why would anyone want the loud one?"

Company officials say the Maxim 9 — which is a firearm made 100 percent by SilencerCo — will be modular like the Osprey series of suppressors and can be shortened to fit different shooting styles and holsters.

By any measure the suppressor business is booming, and SilencerCo has been gobbling up most of that market even as more companies come into the market. According to Waldron his company commands 70 percent of the silencer market and cranks out nearly 12,000 silencers per month on 80 CNC machines.

"I don't mind all the new competition at all," Waldron said. "It just means more people using suppressors and that's a good thing for all of us."
