Gear Roundup: Tactical Ammo

Check out this lineup of some of the year's most popular tactical ammunition.

Gear Roundup: Tactical Ammo

Allegiance Ammunition 9mm SilentStrike

SilentStrike 9mm 130-grain ammo from Allegiance Ammunition is made from dense tungsten compressed powder metal. The high density of the tungsten core gives it the ability to penetrate thick clothing/hide and heavy bone to reach the vitals. Once inside and impacting against fluid-filled tissue, the frangible core is designed to begin violently fragmenting in vertical and horizontal directions, creating a massive expanding rotational multi-directional permanent wound cavity that causes trauma to the central nervous system and shuts it down from overload. This frangible 9mm subsonic round is safe to shoot with suppressors. MSRP: $20/Box of 20.

Black Hills MK262 MOD 1-C

Developed for the military to attain long-range precision from M16-platform weapons and combat proven since 2002, Black Hills MK262 MOD 1 5.56mm ammunition is now available for the commercial market with a “C” designation. MK262 MOD 1C ammo is the exact construction and performance of its U.S. military counterpart — featuring a 77-grain Sierra MatchKing cannelured bullet with a muzzle velocity of 2,725 fps from a 20-inch barrel. Components include special NATO brass, flash-suppressed, temperature-stable propellant and crimped-in-place sealed primers. It will not ship unless it shoots group averages of 2 inches or less at 300 yards (.64 MOA/10-shot groups). Retail: $589.50/460-round can (23 20-round boxes).

Federal Punch

Federal has added a new offering to its defensive handgun ammunition line, drawing from the company’s decades of experience designing tactical loads. Its bullet’s skived jacket, hollow-point design and soft lead core produce massive expansion and deep penetration, while its nickel-plated brass and sealed primer deliver the reliable feeding and ignition needed for personal protection. Punch ammunition is available in five popular self-defense chamberings, but rather than developing a single bullet design for all five loads, the team at Federal evaluated each caliber individually and determined which bullet design and weight would work most effectively for each load. MSRP: $15.99-$21.99/Box of 20.

Fiocchi Blue Guardian Reduced Ricochet

Developed for self and home defense and law enforcement personnel, Fiocchi Blue Guardian Reduced Ricochet hollow-point pistol rounds feature lead-free bullets engineered to disintegrate on surfaces harder than these specifically engineered projectiles. The 9mm, 100-grain pistol round is ideal for dynamic handgun training as well as providing maximum terminal performance on soft targets with greatly reduced ricochet potential. Its heavy metal free primer provides additional safety for use in closed and urban environments where overpenetration and ricochet can be a concern. MSRP: $17/Box of 20.

Fort Scott Munitions 9mm TUI

Fort Scott Munitions 9mm Luger 115-grain match grade handgun ammunition features the company’s patented tumble upon impact (TUI) design. It ensures more soft tissue trauma and hydrostatic shock from a small caliber projectile for increased ballistic effectiveness. Constructed for heavier spring systems, this 9mm variation bridges the gap between Fort Scott’s 9mm 80-grain TUI and its 9mm 125-grain Subsonic TUI — and not only in grain weight, but it even reaches Power Factor for customers who shoot in pistol competitions. This round, since its release, has been Fort Scott’s top seller next to its TPD nickel-cased counterpart. MSRP: $25.34/Box of 20.

Grizzly Ammunition 9mm+P

Now it’s easy to add a little extra punch to any +P rated 9mm personnel carry pistol — by loading it with Grizzly Ammunition’s new 9mm +P 124-Grain ammo. This load, which utilizes a 124-grain jacketed hollow-point bullet, is loaded hot in typical +P fashion — which means it is loaded to a higher internal pressure with more gun powder packed into the same 9mm case — and is to be used only in firearms that are rated for +P ammo. The result is higher velocity and better performance. This added horsepower combined and the JHP bullet make a 9mm an even better choice for personal protection. MSRP: $19.50.

Hornady 6mm ARC Ammunition

Recently tested, selected and fielded by a specialized group within the U.S. Department of Defense for its multipurpose combat rifle program, the 6mm ARC (advanced rifle cartridge) is a truly versatile cartridge that maximizes the potential of the AR-15 platform. Hornady has now introduced the 6mm ARC in three consumer configurations that feature bullets selected to deliver superior performance for hunting, match shooting and personal protection applications. This new cartridge delivers less felt recoil than larger short-action-based cartridges, while taking advantage of modern, heavy-for-caliber 6mm bullets that provide excellent accuracy and ballistic performance at extended range — ballistics comparable to the .308 Win. with recoil similar to the 5.56 NATO. MSRP: $30/Box of 20.

HSM Ammunition 6.5mm Creedmoor Low Recoil

HSM Ammunition has engineered a 6.5mm Creedmoor load that reduces felt recoil by 47 percent. Now, one rifle chambered in this popular cartridge can be shot by any man or woman, girl or boy without worrying about excessive recoil. HSM partnered with Sierra Bullets in developing a proprietary standard weight-for-caliber 140-grain bullet with a distinct HSM orange ballistic tip. Using a premium case and primer combined with a blend of temperature tolerant powders, the bullet leaves the barrel at 2,340 fps with 1,695 foot-pounds of energy. In addition to the 6.5 Creedmoor, HSM Low Recoil ammunition is available in seven other popular cartridges. MSRP: $28.

Liberty Ammunition Ultra-Light

Liberty Ammunition’s new Ultra-Light combines its innovative civil defense projectiles with Shell Shock Tech’s groundbreaking new case to create a formidable self-defense round. The 9mm Ultra-Light’s total cartridge weight is only 93 grains — 52 percent lighter than standard 125-grain 9mm lead jacketed hollow-points. Its projectiles are copper monolithic with nickel plating and are turned on a precision CNC machine for consistency and accuracy and feature a deep, large diameter hollow-point cavity. The Ultra-Light penetrates barriers well, but when its cavity fills with soft tissue/liquid, the hydraulic pressure explodes the side walls of the projectile in a starburst-shaped pattern creating multiple wound channels that cover a much greater area inside the target. MSRP: $31.95/Box of 20.

Speer Gold Dot Carry Gun

Speer has taken its law-enforcement proven Gold Dot G2 hollow-point bullet and modified it to create a new product line called Gold Dot Carry Gun, designed to provide superior feeding, ballistics and terminal performance in compact handguns. The new lineup includes 9mm/135-grain, .40 S&W/165-grain and .45 Auto +P/200-grain loads featuring the original G2’s exclusive bullet nose design. Instead of a large hollow-point cavity, it has a shallow dish filled with a high-performance elastomer. On impact, the material is forced into engineered internal fissures to start the expansion process. The result is extremely uniform expansion, better separation of the petals and more consistent penetration across barrier types. MSRP/Box of 20: $28.99/9mm Luger; $30.99/.40 S&W; $33.99/.45 Auto +P.

Steinel Ammunition Defensive SCHP

Pushing a 185-grain, lead-free, solid copper hollow-point (SCHP) bullet, Steinel Ammunition’s new .45 ACP self-defense round achieved a muzzle velocity of 980 fps from 4.3-inch barrels in an FBI gel test. The projectile rapidly expands uniformly when it hits a soft target and is designed to not over-penetrate the target — with an expansion rate of greater than .8-inch and penetration of 13 inches. Steinel’s .45 ACP Defensive SCHP has proven very reliable with no feeding issues and consistent shots in a variety of .45-style pistols from 1911s to revolvers. This round is a great choice for concealed carry, training and range practice. MSRP: $24.99/Box of 20.

Winchester Silvertip Personal Defense

Winchester Silvertip technology provides threat-stopping power across a wide variety of calibers and bullet weights, its jacketed hollow-point design ensuring reliable functioning, accuracy and consistent expansion for demanding personal and home defense scenarios. Offered in seven calibers — 10mm Auto, .357 Mag., .38 Special, .380 Auto, .40 S&W, .45 Auto and 9mm Luger — and a wide assortment of corresponding bullet weights, Silvertip Personal Defense ammunition is available in convenient, competitively priced 20-round packs available to all personal defense consumers for use in the field, on the range or for personal defense. MSRP: $13-$25/Box of 20.
